GENERAL WELSH HISTORY & SOCIOLOGY

David Cole (ed), The New Wales (Cardiff: UWP, 1990). [Nice collection of essays on most aspects ofWales. Broader in focus than other similar collections.]

[Also see Williams, Gwyn A., ‘With the History Left In: John Davies’s New History of Wales’, Planet 82, 1990] Published in both languages ofWales and the nation’s seminal history. Upbeat in tone, accessible and scholarly but perhaps most remarkable for Penguin’s decision to publish the orginal Welsh version.

Day, Graham, Making Sense of Wales: A Sociological Perspective (Cardiff, 2002). [Critical introduction to the social science literature onWales.  Overlooks popular culture and and criticized by some for not being sympatric enough to the Welsh language but seminal nonetheless.]
